The owners of Cadbury are seeking to cut 70 jobs at its Coolock production plant.

There are currently 380 staff employed by Mondelez Ireland on the Dublin site, and the job cuts come amid investment in technology at the plant.

Trade union representatives from SIPTU and Unite will meet management next week to discuss the job losses.

It is understood that Mondelez will seek voluntary redundancies over two years.

Local TD Tommy Broughan confirmed he had been contacted by Eoin Kellett, Managing Director of Mondelez Ireland, with the “disappointing news”.

Mr Broughan said: “While the promised investment of €15m by Mondelez into manufacturing and packing technology at the Coolock plant is welcome, it’s very disappointing that this positive news is accompanied by an announcement of job cuts.

“Cadbury at Oscar Traynor Road has been a very important employer for the greater Coolock area for nearly 70 years.

“Indeed, the plant which originated and developed many important chocolate products has played an iconic role in Coolock’s history with members of thousands of our families employed there.”

SIPTU Organiser, Colm Casserly, said: “Our members are deeply unhappy with the announcement by management that it is seeking 70 staff redundancies.

“We are currently consulting our members prior to a meeting with management, which will take place at the earliest opportunity next week. At this meeting, SIPTU and Unite representatives will make clear our members’ position and seek to minimise the number of job losses at the plant.”

He added: “Workers at the plant have, over recent years, agreed to the major restructuring of operations and changes in work practices. In light of this the current approach of management is unacceptable and once again raises fears concerning its long-term commitment to this plant and its workforce.”

Mondelez told RTÉ that “like all manufacturers, it keeps its operations under review to ensure its business is operating as efficiently and effectively as possible”.

“We’re now conducting a consultation process and will do all we can to support them moving forward.”
